Cap. Paul Watson - Um verdadeiro guardião dos mares!

Paul Watson nasceu no Canadá em 2 de dezembro de 1950. Ele foi criado na cidade de St. Andrews-by-the-Sea – cuja atividade principal é a pesca de lagosta – em New Brunswick, Canadá. Ele é o mais velho de sete filhos; seu pai era Anthony Joseph Watson, um franco-canadense nascido em New Brunswick, e sua mãe era Annamarie Larsen, filha de um artista dinamarquês, Otto Larsen, e da canadense Doris Phoebe Clark.

Em 1960, Paul tornou-se membro do Kindness Club, fundado por Aida Flemming em New Brunswick. Depois de caçadores matarem um de seus amigos castores, Paul decidiu, com nove anos de idade, confiscar e destruir armadilhas do tipo leg-hold. Ele também ficou conhecido por perturbar caçadores de veados e patos, e por evitar que outros meninos atirassem em aves.

Em 1968, Paul ingressou na Guarda Costeira canadense. Seu primeiro navio foi um Weathership (navios que na realidade são estações em alto-mar, para observações metereológicas), o C.C.G.S. Vancouver. Em 1969, Paul se juntou à tripulação do navio graneleiro norueguês Bris em uma viagem pela Ásia e África. Viajar precocemente com as marinhas mercantes canadense, norueguesa, sueca e britânica conferiu-lhe experiência em todos os oceanos do mundo, inclusive com tufões no Mar da China Meridional, tempestades no Atlântico Norte (nas latitudes ao norte do Atlântico, nas quais há desprendimento de icebergs) e com navegação nas zonas de guerra do Golfo Pérsico. Paul Watson foi um dos co-fundadores do Greenpeace. Seu envolvimento começou com um protesto do Sierra Club, realizado na fronteira entre os E.U.A. e o Canadá em outubro de 1969, contra os testes nucleares realizado pela Comissão de Energia Atômica em Amchitka Island.

Alguns dos participantes do protesto organizaram um pequeno grupo de trabalho para discutir idéias de oposição aos testes em Amchitka. O grupo foi chamado de Comitê “Não Faça Onda” e era composto principalmente por membros do Sierra Club e da Sociedade de Amigos (Quakers). Paul era membro do Sierra Club, e sua motivação para protestar contra a realização dos teste em Amchitka foi a sua preocupação com a fauna marinha do local.

O Greenpeace I era um barco de pesca canadense anteriormente conhecido como Phyllis Cormack. O navio partiu de Vancouver, British Columbia, com destino à Amchitka Island, (sob o comando do Capitão John Cormack), com a intenção de navegar até a zona de testes. Havia treze voluntários a bordo, incluindo Robert Hunter, Rod Marining e Lyle Thurston. Três décadas mais tarde, estes três ainda navegarim em campanhas da Sea Shepherd com o Capitão Watson.

Os testes foram adiados e o Greenpeace I, depois de um mês no mar, voltou para Vancouver.

Enquanto isso, um segundo navio era organizado. Este era um caça-minas canadense chamado de Edgewater Fortune. Ele foi renomeado como Também Greenpeace. Um de seus tripulantes foi Paul Watson.

Também Greenpeace passou pelo Greenpeace I perto de Campbell River, e seguiu rumo ao norte do Alasca - em primeiro lugar para Juneau, e, depois seguindo por todo o Golfo do Alasca até Aleutians (distrito do Alasca)

Quando o Também Greenpeace estava apenas a algumas centenas de milhas de distância, uma explosão de cinco-megaton foi detonada em Amchitka Island.

A controvérsia gerada pelas viagens do Greenpeace levou à decisão de cancelar mais testes, e a detonação de novembro de 1971 foi o último teste nuclear feito em Amchitka.

Em 1972, o Comitê “Não Faça Onda” tomou para si o nome dos dois navios de sua primeira campanha e mudou seu nome para Fundação Greenpeace.

Paul Watson foi um dos membros fundadores e diretores do Greenpeace. Na verdade, ele foi oficialmente o oitavo membro fundador. Robert Hunter foi o primeiro, e enquanto membro seu número era 000. Sua esposa Roberta Hunter foi a segunda, e membro número 001. O número de adesão oficial de Paul Watson era e continua a ser 007.

Em 1972, Paul Watson embarcou em uma pequena embarcação do Greenpeace, Astral, e o colocou em rota de colisão com o porta-avião francês Jeanne d'Arc, no porto de Vancouver. Em 1975, Watson serviu como primeiro oficial sob o comando do Capitão John Cormack em uma viagem que pretendia confrontar a frota baleeira soviética. Apenas os poucos segundos nos quais viu o olhar da baleia que estava morrendo foram suficientes para mudar sua vida para sempre. Ele prometeu que por toda a vida seria um defensor das baleias vida e de todas as criaturas do mar.

Em 1976, Paul serviu novamente como primeiro oficial, na viagem do Greenpeace V (este era o antigo caçador de minas canadense James Bay). Mais uma vez, a tripulação confrontou a frota baleeira soviética, desta vez norte do Havaí.

Logo após a campanha das baleias, Paul e David Garrick organizaram e comandaram a primeira campanha do Greenpeace para proteger focas Harp e Hood (espécies de focas) na costa leste do Canadá. Durante esta campanha, Robert Hunter e Paul Watson fizeram um grande navio caçador de focas ficar preso no gelo posicionando gelo no seu caminho.

O relato da campanha de Watson foi publicado no Georgia Straight Newspaper e intitulado de Pastores do Fronte do Labrador (Shepherds of the Labrador Front). Este artigo inspirou o nome Sea Shepherd poucos anos mais tarde.

Em 1977, Paul liderou a segunda campanha do Greenpeace que se opunha à caça de focas ao longo da costa do Labrador, desta vez trazendo Brigitte Bardot para o gelo, para chamar a atenção internacional sobre o abate de focas.

Em junho de 1977, Paul Watson demitiu-se da Fundação Greenpeace movido pelas discordâncias que tinha com a emergente estrutura burocrática da organização. Patrick Moore tinha substituído Robert Hunter, e opôs-se à campanhas de ação direta. Moore Watson havia informado a Watson que ele não teria mais permissão para conduzir outra campanha sobre as focas.

Paul deixou o Greenpeace porque ele sentiu que os objetivos originais da organização estavam começando a ficar comprometidos, e porque ele viu uma necessidade global de continuar a ação direta, voltada a atividades de conservação no alto mar, por uma organização que faria com que fossem cumpridas as leis que protegem a fauna marinha.

Para responder a essa necessidade, naquele mesmo ano, Paul fundou a Sociedade Sea Shepherd Conservation - dedicada à investigação, inquérito e de execução das leis, tratados, resoluções e regulamentos estabelecidos para proteger a fauna marinha mundial. Em dezembro de 1978, com o apoio do Fundo para Animais, Paul comprou na Grã-Bretanha um Arrastão (barco pesqueiro) do Atlântico Norte e o converteu no navio voltado à conservação Sea Shepherd.

Ao longo dos anos, Paul revelou uma notável diversidade em seu ativismo. Além de co-fundador do Greenpeace, em 1972 e do Greenpeace Internacional em 1979, e fundador da Sea Shepherd, em 1977, Paul foi um correspondente de campo dos Defensores da Vida Selvagem, entre 1976 e 1980. Ele foi um agente de campo representativo do Fundo de animais entre 1978 e 1981, e um representante da Royal Society for the Protection of Animals em 1979. Ele foi co-fundador do Friends of Wolf em 1984 e da Earthforce Ambiental Society em 1977. Paul primeiramente foi associado do Sierra Club em 1968, e ele manteve-se filiado desde então. Em abril de 2003, Paul foi eleito para o Conselho Nacional do Sierra Club E.U.A. Ele foi diretor até 2006.

Paul é formado em comunicações e lingüística pela Universidade Simon Fraser, de British Columbia. Ele já lecionou amplamente em universidades de todo o mundo, e foi professor de Ecologia no Pasadena College of Design, de 1990 até ao ano de 1994. Paul também foi um instrutor no Honors Program da UCLA entre 1998 e 1999. Atualmente, Paul é um orador registrado no Jodi Salomon Speakers Bureau de Boston, e regularmente apresenta-se em faculdades e universidades nos Estados Unidos, e em eventos especiais em todo mundo.

No âmbito político, Paul tem se candidatado para membro do Parlamento de Vancouver, nas eleições federais canadenses. Ele concorreu duas vezes pelo Partido Verde. Ele também concorreu para prefeito de Vancouver, em 1995.

Paul recebeu muitos prêmios e comendas ao longo dos anos. Em 1996, ele nomeado cidadão honorário da cidade francesa de St. Jean Cap Ferrat. Antes disso ele também já havia sido nomeado cidadão honorário, tendo recebido as chaves da Flórida em 1989. Outras premiações incluem o Prêmio Toronto City TV's Ambientalistas do Ano, em 1990, o Genesis Award em 1998, e ele foi colocado no Hall da Fama dos Direitos Animais dos E.U.A. em 2002. Ele também recebeu o “George H. Bush Daily Points of Light”, em 1999, por seu esforço voluntário no ativismo conservativo.
